Secret life of Konavle

History, Sightseeing, Lifestyle & Food

A fascinating region in the hinterland of Dubrovnik, known for its traditional way of living, hand-made embroidery, amazing landscape, rich cultural heritage and delicious food. Konavle is a unique agricultural and farming country with rich cultural heritage at the very south of Croatia.

This tour takes you away from the hustle of the city allowing you to enjoy astonishing views and to take great pictures of the Old town of Dubrovnik from the mountain viewpoint.

As you drive through the picturesque countryside and beautiful villages on your way to Konavle, your guide will explain all the information about Croatia and Dubrovnik, past and present, as well as many legends connected with this amazing part of the world. You will be surprised of how much history and traditions there is in this small region.

First stop is by the river, discovering a complex of water mills used to produce flour and compact fabric. Lovely hosts in national costumes will show you how these ancient mills work and explain how 500 years ago families in Konavle made their livelihood, and you will have the chance to try some of their homemade sweets and liquors.

Our next stop is a visit to a local gallery where you will have the opportunity to see some of the remarkable work made by a famous local artist. The crown of our visit to the gallery is an exhibit of live silk worms used to create traditional Konavle costumes. From the tiny eggs to cocoons the worms are being carefully taken care of by artist herself, in this wonderful place. She has succeeded in returning this amazing tradition back into the Konavle homes and schools, just as it used to be in the old days before modernisation, in the times when each young girl in Konavle region spent years carefully taking care of these small creatures vital for the producing of the embroidery that will not only beautify them but also serve as a major part of their identity.

Before ending this eventful day you will have a chance to visit this pitoresque little town and have a coffee along the lovely palmed-lined sea promenade, in a bay encircled by two peninsulas that make Cavtat a safe harbour frequentely visited by numerous sailors and yacht enthusiasts. Cavtat is a gentle oasis bellow the steep hills of Konavle, once an ancient Roman town, today one of the most beautiful small settlements along the Adriatic coast. A perfect ending to a perfect tour.

We can visit some small but extremely respected family run wineries.

Gorgeous ambience of centuries-old cellars and vineyards are not to be missed while visiting Konvale. Our friendly hosts are expert winers whose families have cultivated grapes in Konavle for hundreds of years. This is a great opportunity for the wine enthusiasts to meet local wine producers and taste some of the best local wines.
